Fairytale Friday - The Promise

I wanted to post this yesterday, but then I had to spend the evening in the hospital because of my child's high spirits.

I wanted to briefly mention the inspiration for my upcoming Boss Battler, The Promise. Boss battlers are usually about humans fighting overpowered monsters. But since I wanted to set the game in the universe of my other game, Grimm World, I had a problem. In Grimm World, there are not so many overpowered monster. The fairy tale about Tom Thumb came to mind. A tiny little human. And little humans can fight anything, because everything is overpowered and huge. Even animals like rats, crows, spiders, etc. I wanted a variation and decided on rats and crows for the basic game. Something that fights on the ground and something that can fly.

I also need motivation, and that often happens in fairy tales. Some nobleman makes a promise that they ultimately don't want to keep. Perfect. The first fairy tale that comes to mind is the Frog King, but I've already used that in Grimm World. So I came up with the fairy tale Hans my Hedgehog. But who knows, maybe I'll pick up the Frog King in future 😉

Those were the two fairy tales that inspired my game.

Otherwise, I based the feel (not necessarily the mechanics) of one of my absolute favorite games, Kingdom Death Monster. Unfortunately, Kingdom Death Monster is very expensive, need a lot of table space and is very time-consuming. I wanted to make it more manageable somehow.

What was very important aspects, I want to take over in my game?

Of course, I wanted to fight against overpowered enemies on a battlefield. So I don’t want any abstract combat. And I want to receive resources from killing enemies and build then new and better equipment from their remains. And these equipment should unlock abilities based on combinations. This was really a fun part in KDM, so it was important that this is also in my game.

Positioning and teamwork are also immensely important in the game.

And so that I don't get bored of it; I've imposed a limit of 18 cards on myself. In addition to the 18 cards, you also need some markers/cubes and dice. Nevertheless, everything fits in a deck box, and you can complete a complete campaign in just 2-3 hours.

But see for yourself when the Promise is released as a print and play game in a few weeks.
